Safety starts with the right risk assessment

Last week, we delivered four MEWP training courses for different teams, and it really highlighted an important point: safety isn’t just about knowing how to operate the machine, it’s about understanding the risks of your specific job at height.
Too often, we see workplaces relying on a generic risk assessment that misses the real hazards workers face.
On paper, a scissor lift is a scissor lift — but the risks change dramatically depending on the task.
One group were cleaners using scissor lifts to power wash walls and ceilings, dealing with slippery platforms, water spray, and reduced visibility.
Another group were maintenance engineers removing heavy motors and fans, facing risks like overloading, falling objects, and awkward lifting at height.
The takeaway? A generic risk assessment isn’t good enough.
Whether you’re cleaning, maintaining, inspecting or installing — your safety starts with identifying the specific hazards of your task at height.
