Don't skip your equipment safety checks
During a recent site visit, I came across several pieces of material handling equipment (MHE) with no evidence of a valid thorough examination (TE) — a legal requirement that’s often overlooked.
Under LOLER, all lifting equipment — such as forklifts, cranes, hoists, and attachments — must undergo a TE by a competent person, at least every 12 months (or every 6 months if lifting people, or if otherwise specified). This is to ensure the equipment is safe and fit for use.
Failing to keep up with TEs can result in unsafe equipment, invalidated insurance, enforcement action, fines, and even prosecution if an accident happens.
In this case, we’ve helped customer arrange a TE for the very next day so training could go ahead without delay — it really is worth staying on top of.
If you’re unsure what applies to your fleet, speak to your safety advisor, and make sure your records are in order.
Safety and compliance protect everyone — don’t wait for something to go wrong.
