On a counterbalance course, we trained a team dealing with tight racking installed close to perimeter walls — a setup that left no room for broadside Euro pallet placement without undercutting.

During a recent site visit, I came across several pieces of material handling equipment (MHE) with no evidence of a valid thorough examination (TE) — a legal requirement that’s often overlooked.

It’s tempting to think that once an operator has years of experience, the risk of accidents drops away. But the reality is very different — some of the most serious incidents I’ve come across have involved highly experienced drivers.

On recent operator training we identified a serious hazard: pallet racking beams installed without locking pins.

The photos show beams resting unsecured. This kind of hazard isn’t always visible at a glance — but in a busy warehouse, it poses a high risk of failure.

One knock from a truck or pallet and that level could drop, bringing tonnes of stock down with it.

Last week, we delivered four MEWP training courses for different teams, and it really highlighted an important point: safety isn’t just about knowing how to operate the machine, it’s about understanding the risks of your specific job at height.

We are thrilled to announce that we’ve been named a finalist in 3 categories for UK Material Handling Association #thearchies2025 awards!
